Field Work Term (FWT) is a thrilling part of a Bennington education. Every year from early January to mid-February, you’ll head out to explore your interests in the world of work. Like most great adventures, it takes preparation to make it a success. As such, the Field Work Term and Career Development Office (FWT & CDO) staff encourage you to start planning for FWT early.
One key step in preparing for FWT is translating your activities, honors, work and volunteer experience into a standard resume that you can use to connect with organizations in our database, or ones that you’ve identified on your own. Because this is such an important part of the FWT planning process, and because it takes time to craft and refine a resume, the FWT Office strongly encourages all incoming students to create a draft resume to share with our career advisors at the beginning of fall term. Doing so will give you a headstart in the FWT planning process. You can follow these basic resume guidelines and sample first year resume to get started. Simply make a copy of the sample resume Google doc and fill in your own information to replace the sample text. If you have questions, please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at 802-440-4321.
Below are additional tips to help you begin planning for your first FWT:
- Think about what kinds of experiences you might like to have or what you would like to learn during your first FWT. What types of work environments are compelling to you? What cities or states are you interested in exploring?
- Begin networking by talking with people about FWT. Ask them what kind of work they do and if they know of anyone who might be interested in having a winter intern. Tell them about your interests and see if that sparks any connections.
- Once you’re at Bennington, schedule a meeting with the FWT & CDO staff. We can help by introducing you to FWT resources including our employer database, virtual career resource library, FWT housing referrals, FWT grant funding, and skills/interest assessment tools. We encourage you to schedule appointments with our advisors early and often in order to stay on track with your FWT search. Additionally, be on the lookout during fall term for FWT workshops designed to help you navigate the process of securing your first FWT position
The FWT & CDO staff looks forward to helping you make your first FWT a fantastic experience. Don’t hesitate to email or call if you have questions; we are here all summer and we look forward to working with you.
